How to Clean a Glass Stovetop Without Scratching It
The wrong scraper or cloth will permanently scratch a glass stovetop. Here's the safe method for every level of mess β from everyday splatter to the baked-on disaster from last month's cooking.
Glass and ceramic stovetops are one of the most common surfaces damaged by incorrect cleaning. A scratch on a glass stovetop is permanent β the smooth, flat surface is compromised, and every future spill settles into the scratch and is harder to clean. And unlike most cleaning mistakes, you usually don't notice you've scratched the surface until the damage is done.
The scratching risk comes from two sources: abrasive cleaning pads, and grit on the surface that's dragged across the glass when you wipe before rinsing. Getting the method right eliminates both risks.
Understanding the Surface
Glass and ceramic stovetops (including induction cooktops, which have a glass ceramic surface) are extremely hard and heat-resistant β but not scratch-resistant in the way that metal surfaces are. The hardness means they resist cracking from cooking heat. But fine grit or abrasive materials dragged across the surface under pressure cut fine scratches into the glass.
The surface is also susceptible to specific types of staining from prolonged heat contact with sugary foods (which can cause discolouration that bonds to the glass at cooking temperatures) and from melted plastic or aluminium foil (which can chemically bond to the glass surface).
What Never to Use on Glass Stovetops
Steel wool or green scouring pads: These create immediate, severe scratching. Never.
Abrasive powders (Ajax, Comet, Bon Ami): Fine abrasive particles that scratch the glass surface.
Standard kitchen scrubbers: Even the softer blue and white scrubbing pads contain enough abrasive to scratch glass stovetops with repeated use.
Rough cloths or paper towels: Paper towels are fine abrasively but leave lint. More importantly, using a cloth to scrub grit across the glass (before rinsing the grit off first) creates scratches.
Bleach directly on the surface: Can cause discolouration on some glass surfaces with prolonged contact.
Everyday Cleaning (After Normal Cooking)
For the daily or after-each-use clean:

Let the surface cool completely. Never apply cold water or cleaning product to a hot glass stovetop β thermal shock can crack the surface. Wait until cool.

Rinse away loose debris first. Before any wiping, apply a small amount of water to the surface and rinse away any loose food particles. This prevents grit being dragged across the glass under pressure in the wiping step.

Apply a glass stovetop cleaner. Dedicated glass stovetop cleaners (Cerama Bryte, Wesco Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner, or Miele's own cleaners for matching appliances) are formulated specifically for this surface β they clean without scratching. A small pea-sized amount on a damp cloth is sufficient for a standard cook's residue.
Alternative: A tiny amount of dish soap on a damp microfibre cloth works for light residue. Use minimal soap β excess soap leaves a hazy residue on glass surfaces.

Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. Use a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Work in circular motions for removal, then finish with straight strokes parallel to any surface grain. Apply even pressure β don't scrub hard.

Polish dry. Use a second dry microfibre cloth to buff the surface dry. A glass stovetop left with water on it shows water marks and minor mineral deposits (particularly in Adelaide's hard water). Drying immediately after cleaning produces a clean, streak-free result.
Removing Baked-On Spills and Stains
Spills that have been cooked onto the glass during subsequent use are the hardest cleaning challenge on a glass stovetop. The food residue has been heated multiple times and bonded to the glass surface.
The Razor Scraper Method (Most Effective)
A dedicated glass stovetop scraper β a single-edge razor blade in a safety handle β is the correct tool for removing baked-on residue from glass surfaces. This is the same tool used for removing stickers from glass and for cleaning tempered glass panels.
Important: Only use a scraper at a low angle (approximately 20β30 degrees to the glass surface) and only on a wet surface with cleaning product applied. Scraping at a steep angle or on a dry surface creates scratches.
- Apply glass stovetop cleaner or a small amount of dish soap to the baked-on residue. Leave to soften for 5 minutes.
- Hold the scraper at a very low angle (nearly flat against the glass).
- Push the scraper forward under the residue with smooth, even pressure β don't saw back and forth.
- The residue should lift away from the glass as a solid piece.
- Wipe away the loosened residue and cleaning product.
- Clean the surface with a damp microfibre cloth and dry.
What to use: A specific glass cooktop scraper (available at appliance stores, hardware stores and from cooktop manufacturers). Most come with replacement blades. Replace the blade when it feels rough rather than smooth against the glass.
What not to use: A standard metal knife or spatula. The edge geometry is wrong, the angle is wrong, and these tools scratch rather than lift residue.
Baking Soda Paste (For Moderate Residue)
For spills that aren't fully baked on:
- Make a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water β thick enough to stay on the surface.
- Apply to the stained area.
- Cover with a warm, damp cloth and leave for 15β20 minutes. The steam softens the residue.
- Wipe away the paste with the cloth.
- Use the glass stovetop cleaner and a microfibre cloth to polish clean.
The baking soda is mildly alkaline and mildly abrasive at a grain size safe for glass. It doesn't scratch in the way that commercial abrasive cleaners do.
Prolonged Heat Staining (Dark Discolouration)
Sometimes glass cooktops develop a dark, hazy discolouration from overheating β particularly from pots that have boiled dry or from cooking at maximum temperature for extended periods. This can look like staining but is actually a change in the glass surface from extreme heat.
For this type of discolouration: apply ceramic cooktop cleaner and a dedicated cooktop polish (Cerama Bryte Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner with the polishing formula). Rub with a clean cloth in circular motions. The polish works by very mild mechanical action to restore the glass surface. Multiple applications may be needed.
If the discolouration doesn't respond to cleaning, it may be permanent surface damage from extreme overheating.
Sugar-Based Spills: Handle Immediately
Sugar (from jam, syrup, soda, or any sweet food) spilled on a hot glass stovetop is a special case that requires immediate attention β more urgent than any other spill type.
Sugar at high temperatures can bond to the glass surface chemically and, in severe cases, can permanently damage or crack the surface as the sugar contracts when it cools. The damage from a sugar spill left on a hot cooktop can be irreversible.
Immediate action: While the cooktop is still warm (not hot β allow it to cool from scorching hot, but don't wait until fully cold), use a glass cooktop scraper to remove the sugar while it's still relatively liquid or soft. Don't wait for it to cool completely and harden.
If the sugar has already cooled and hardened: apply warm water to soften, then scrape carefully at a low angle.
Induction Cooktops Specifically
Induction cooktops have a glass ceramic surface identical in composition to radiant (traditional electric) glass stovetops. The same cleaning rules apply.
One practical difference: the induction surface itself doesn't heat up β heat is generated in the pan, not the cooktop. Spills that occur on an induction cooktop away from the pan don't experience the same high-temperature bonding. This makes spills slightly easier to clean than on a radiant stovetop.
However, spills under or adjacent to the pan on an induction cooktop still heat from the bottom of the hot pan and can bake on in the same way.
Maintaining the Surface Long-Term
Clean after every use: The most protective habit for a glass stovetop. Fresh spills wipe away in seconds. Spills that are cooked over multiple subsequent uses become the baked-on residue that requires scrapers and extended cleaning.
Apply cooktop polish monthly: A thin coat of ceramic cooktop polish (Cerama Bryte or similar) applied after cleaning and buffed to a shine protects the surface and makes subsequent cleaning easier by reducing the friction that allows food to bond to the glass.
Match pot diameter to burner size: Oversized pots on small burners heat unevenly and can cause excessive residue buildup at the edges of the heating zone. Properly matched pots reduce spill risk and produce more even heating.
