How to Get a Sparkling Clean Home Before Christmas
Christmas is when everyone comes to your place. Here's the pre-Christmas clean plan that gets your home ready without turning the first week of December into a cleaning marathon.
Christmas in Adelaide is a specific domestic pressure: hot weather, everyone at home, family visiting, entertaining happening, and somehow the house needs to look its best at exactly the time when you're also cooking, shopping, attending events and managing about seventeen other things simultaneously.
The key is a plan that spreads the work sensibly rather than attempting a marathon clean the day before Christmas. This guide gives you a four-week approach to a genuinely clean home for Christmas β and the things to prioritise when time is short.
Why Pre-Christmas Cleaning Is Different
The pre-Christmas clean has a different focus from a standard deep clean. You're preparing for:
- Guests who will be in your home β they'll see areas that daily life doesn't require you to notice. The guest bathroom. The bedrooms if you have people staying. The areas behind the couch. The oven if there's cooking happening.
- Extended entertaining β Christmas Day cooking produces more mess than normal. The kitchen needs to start clean and functional.
- Children everywhere β if children are visiting, floor cleanliness and the safety of the garden matter more than usual.
- Heat β Adelaide Christmases are warm. Smells that are masked in winter are more apparent in the heat. The bins, the oven, the kitchen β all need specific attention.
The Four-Week Plan
Week 1 (First Week of December): Deep Areas
Start with the things that take time and effort and can be done without disrupting daily life.
Oven: Book this first week. A clean oven at the start of December means it stays manageable through Christmas. The oven is the single most time-intensive kitchen task and one that guests won't see directly but will definitely smell if it's burning off months of residue during Christmas cooking.
Inside kitchen cupboards: Tidy and wipe the pantry. Check use-by dates. Clear out the junk that accumulates in kitchen cupboards. Do this at a relaxed pace over a couple of evenings.
Fridges and freezers: Clear out the fridge of anything not needed. Wipe shelves and door seals. This creates space for Christmas food and means the fridge starts clean before it gets heavily loaded.
Garage, shed, or storage areas: If you're expecting guests to park in the garage, or if the garage is visible from the garden, clear and tidy it now. This is the week for the tasks that won't be urgent until suddenly they are.
Guest rooms: If you're having people stay, prepare guest rooms now β strip and rewash linen, wipe surfaces and wardrobe interiors, ensure there are hangers and space available. Doing this three weeks before means it doesn't become a last-minute scramble.
Week 2 (Second Week of December): The Full Clean
This is the main cleaning week β a thorough clean from top to bottom while the house is in its pre-Christmas state (before extra food, decorations and guest traffic start).
Bathrooms: full deep clean in Adelaide of all bathrooms. The guest bathroom in particular needs to be presented at its best. Descale taps and shower fittings, clean grout, polish mirror and fixtures, replace any worn or depleted toiletries or towels.
Living areas: Vacuum upholstered furniture thoroughly. Wipe all surfaces. Dust all shelves including tops of items. Clean the coffee table and any glass surfaces. If you have a fireplace, clean the surround and mantelpiece.
Windows: Clean internal windows β particularly those facing your outdoor entertaining area. Guests arriving often look through the window before coming in. Clean windows make an immediate impression.
Floors: Thorough vacuum of all carpeted areas. Mop all hard floors. Pay particular attention to areas that will be high-traffic over Christmas.
Outdoor entertaining area: If Christmas entertaining will be outside (very common in Adelaide given the heat), clean the outdoor area this week. Pressure wash the paving if needed. Clean outdoor furniture and cushions. Clear cobwebs from eaves and outdoor lights. Set up the space so it's ready.
Week 3 (Third Week of December): Maintenance and Detail
The house is now clean from last week. This week is about maintaining it through the busyness of pre-Christmas and catching detail items.
Daily maintenance: Keep the kitchen clean as Christmas activity ramps up. Wipe benches after every preparation session. Empty bins frequently β in Adelaide's pre-Christmas heat, food waste smells fast.
Detail items: Address any specific items that came to your attention during Week 2's clean. The exhaust fan you noticed. The bathroom grouting you meant to do. The ceiling fan in the main living area one-off cleaning service in Adelaide arrive.
Decoration installation: Putting up Christmas decorations after the clean (rather than cleaning around them) is more efficient. Decorations also create additional dust trapping surfaces that will need attention if put up too early.
Gift storage: If gifts are accumulating, find an organised storage spot that doesn't create visual clutter in the main living areas.
Week 4 (Christmas Week): Light Maintenance and Pre-Day Reset
By Christmas week, the house should be in good shape from the previous weeks. This week is light maintenance plus a pre-Christmas Day reset.
Christmas Eve reset (or the morning of Christmas):
- Kitchen: completely clear benchtops and wiped ready for cooking
- All bins emptied and new liners in
- Bathrooms: quick wipe of basin and toilet in all bathrooms, replace hand towels
- Living areas: straighten and plump cushions, quick vacuum if needed
- Outdoor area: quick sweep and set the table if entertaining outside
- Floor: quick vacuum or sweep of main living areas
This reset takes 45 minutes to an hour and ensures the house is in its best state as guests arrive.
If You Only Have One Week: The Priority List
If December has escaped you and you have limited time, prioritise in this order:
-
Guest bathroom: The bathroom guests will use must be impeccable. Full clean, fresh towels, refilled soap.
-
Kitchen: Clear benchtops, clean oven (at least the door glass visible to guests), clean sink and taps, clean floor.
-
Main living area floor: Vacuum and mop β guests see and walk on this surface constantly.
-
Bins: Empty all bins and replace liners. A full or smelling bin in summer heat is the fastest way to undercut an otherwise clean house.
-
Outdoor area: If entertaining outside, a quick sweep and wipe of outdoor furniture.
-
Bedrooms for staying guests: If people are sleeping over, these rooms need a clean.
Everything else β the guest bedroom you're not using, the study, the garage β can wait until after Christmas if time is short.
The Case for Booking a Pre-Christmas Professional Clean
Adelaide professional cleaners book out in December. If you want a professional clean in the week or two before Christmas, book by the end of November. The week before Christmas is the most requested time of year and fills up weeks in advance.
A professional clean in the second week of December takes the main cleaning work off your plate entirely. You do the pre-clean tidy (clear surfaces, pick up clutter), the professionals handle the thorough clean, and you arrive at Christmas week with the house already in excellent condition.
At PF Cleaning, December bookings open in October and our pre-Christmas slots fill quickly. Contact us now to secure your December clean.
