How to Clean an Outdoor Entertaining Area for Summer
Before summer entertaining season in Adelaide β here's how to properly prepare your outdoor space. Paving, furniture, BBQ, lighting, and the spots most people overlook.
Adelaide's summer outdoor entertaining season runs from October through March β six months of long evenings, outdoor dinners, Christmas gatherings, New Year's, and summer entertaining that often happens outside because the weather demands it.
Getting your outdoor entertaining area ready for summer isn't just about aesthetics. Moss and algae on pavers are slip hazards for guests. A grimy BBQ is a food safety issue. Dusty outdoor furniture in Adelaide's pre-summer conditions makes everything look neglected. And cobwebs in the overhead lights are the first thing guests see when they arrive in the evening.
This is the complete outdoor entertaining area preparation guide for Adelaide summer.
Assess Before You Start
Walk through your outdoor space with a critical eye before starting. Look for:
- Paving condition: Stains, moss, algae growth, weed growth in joins
- Furniture condition: Structural damage, rust, deteriorated paint, mouldy cushions
- BBQ condition: Grease buildup, rust, general state
- Lighting: Working bulbs, condition of fittings, cobwebs around lights
- Overhead structures: Pergola, shade sail, patio roof β condition and cleanliness
- Garden beds: Condition visible from the entertaining area
- Drainage: Does water pool on the paving? (A safety and enjoyment issue in summer storms)
This assessment determines what needs cleaning, what needs maintenance, and what needs replacing before summer.
Step 1: Paving, Pavers and Concrete
Paved outdoor areas accumulate a year's worth of organic growth, staining and general grime. In Adelaide's climate, the combination of winter moisture and spring warmth creates ideal conditions for moss and algae growth, particularly on shaded or south-facing areas.
Removing Weeds from Joints
Weed growth in paver joints is cosmetically poor and structurally damaging β roots displace sand and destabilise pavers over time. Remove weeds first, before any wet cleaning.
Method: Pull weeds by hand or use a weeding tool to remove root systems. A hoe or manual weeder for wider joints. After removal, treat joints with a natural weed suppressant (boiling water works for initial treatment; commercially available natural herbicides for ongoing control).
Sweeping and Preparation
Sweep the entire surface thoroughly to remove loose debris, leaf litter and dry dust. This prevents loose material being pushed around during wet cleaning.
Pressure Washing
For most paved outdoor entertaining areas, professional pressure washing in Adelaide is the most effective cleaning method. It removes organic growth, staining and general grime far more effectively than hand scrubbing.
Technique: Use a surface cleaner attachment rather than a direct nozzle for even results and to avoid marking. Work in the same direction as the drainage flow. On pavers, use the nozzle at an angle to avoid displacing jointing sand directly.
For moss and algae-heavy areas: pre-treat with a diluted bleach solution (1:10 with water) or a commercial algaecide, leave for 20 minutes to kill the growth before pressure washing. Dead organic matter washes away much more cleanly than live, which tends to smear.
Pressure setting: 1500β2500 PSI for most pavers and concrete. Reduce pressure for older, softer pavers that might surface-etch under high pressure.
Specific Stain Treatment
Rust stains: Oxalic acid solution (Bar Keeper's Friend) applied before pressure washing.
Oil and grease (BBQ spatter, engine oil from adjacent driveway): Degrease first β apply commercial degreaser, leave 10β15 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush, then pressure wash.
Moss and lichen in shaded areas: Post-clean application of a long-duration algaecide or anti-fungal treatment prevents rapid re-growth. Wet & Forget applied after drying gives 12+ months of inhibition.
Re-Sanding Paver Joints
After pressure washing, paver joints lose some jointing sand. Re-sand joints before the first use of the area. Kiln-dried jointing sand (available at hardware stores) brushed across the paving and swept into the joints, then compacted, stabilises pavers and reduces weed growth.
Step 2: Outdoor Furniture
Cleaning by Material
Powder-coated aluminium (most common for modern outdoor furniture): Wipe down with warm soapy water and a cloth. Check for any chips in the coating β chipped powder coat in Adelaide's summer heat allows moisture ingress and corrosion to begin. Touch-up paint (matching powder coat spray) addresses small chips before they progress.
Resin/plastic furniture: Wash with warm soapy water. For any chalky oxidation on the surface (common on older plastic exposed to UV), a plastic restorer spray or car headlight restorer rubbed into the surface significantly improves the appearance.
Teak and hardwood furniture: Wash with a teak cleaner or warm soapy water and a soft brush. For weathered grey teak, a teak brightener (oxalic acid based product) restores the natural honey colour before re-oiling. Apply teak oil or hardwood furniture oil after cleaning and drying. This protects against the drying effect of Adelaide's summer UV.
Glass-top tables: Standard glass cleaner and microfibre cloth, checked from multiple angles in sunlight for streaks.
Cushions and Fabric
Outdoor cushions that have been through an Adelaide winter often have mildew spots and general dinginess.
Checking cushion condition: Look specifically for mould β grey or black spots on the fabric. Smell the cushion with your face close to the fabric β mildew has a distinctive musty odour that isn't always visible.
Washing cushion covers: Most quality outdoor cushion covers unzip and can be machine washed. Wash in warm water with a small amount of detergent plus half a cup of white vinegar (the vinegar inhibits mildew re-growth). Line dry completely before replacing on cushions β machine drying at high heat can shrink some outdoor fabrics.
Cushion foam inserts: Foam inserts that have absorbed moisture or developed mould smell should be replaced. Mouldy foam is very difficult to fully remediate and will re-contaminate clean covers.
Cushion storage going forward: Even the best outdoor fabric degrades faster than necessary when left out year-round. Store cushions in a ventilated storage box or bag when not in use for extended periods (more than a week). This dramatically extends their life.
Step 3: The BBQ
A BBQ that's been sitting through winter needs a proper clean before summer use. We cover this in detail in our kettle BBQ restoration guide and pre-summer gas BBQ guide, but the key points for pre-summer preparation:
- Check gas connections and hose condition (gas BBQ) or clear venturi tubes of spider webs (both types)
- Clean the grate and cook surfaces thoroughly
- Clear the grease trap/tray
- Season cast iron grates before first cook
- Check that the BBQ is stable and the cover is in good condition
Step 4: Overhead Structures
Pergola and Patio Roof
Pergola beams and patio roof structures accumulate:
- Cobwebs and spider nests (particularly prominent after Adelaide's winter)
- Dust and pollen (deposited on horizontal surfaces)
- Bird droppings on horizontal elements
- Mould on the underside of shade structures in areas that stay damp
Method: A long-handled cobweb brush or duster to clear cobwebs first. Wipe horizontal surfaces with a damp cloth on a telescoping handle. For bird droppings, a damp cloth with a small amount of enzyme cleaner to fully neutralise the acidic compounds (untreated bird droppings etch timber and metal over time).
Shade Sails
Remove shade sails for cleaning before summer use. Most shade sails can be hand-washed with warm soapy water (not in a washing machine β the stress can damage the structural stitching). Lay flat or hang to dry completely before re-rigging.
Check the fixing points and tensioners for any rust or wear. Damaged shade sail fixings in Adelaide's summer winds are a serious risk.
Overhead Lighting
Replace any dead bulbs before your first summer entertaining event (discovering a dead outdoor light when guests are arriving is frustrating). Wipe light fittings with a damp cloth. Check that wiring is intact and that any outdoor-rated fittings haven't deteriorated.
Step 5: The Details That Make It Feel Finished
Outdoor rugs: Hose off, scrub with a brush and diluted outdoor rug cleaner, rinse and dry completely in the sun before replacing.
Plant pots and garden beds visible from entertaining area: Tidy garden edges, prune any overgrown plants, and refresh mulch in visible garden beds. The visual backdrop of your entertaining area matters for the overall impression.
Outdoor speakers or audio equipment: Wipe down and check function if used seasonally.
The bin area: If your outdoor bin is visible from the entertaining area, clean it (inside and out) before summer begins.
