How to Clean a Spa or Bathtub That Has Turned Yellow
A yellow bathtub looks worse than it usually is. Acrylic and fibreglass baths yellow from UV exposure, hard water and product residue β but most can be restored without harsh abrasives. Here's how.
A bathtub that has yellowed or discoloured from its original white looks grimy regardless of how recently it was cleaned. It's one of those visual problems that makes a bathroom feel old and uncared-for β but in most cases, the discolouration is treatable and the bath is in better condition than it appears.
Understanding why baths yellow helps you choose the right treatment. The cause determines the method.
Why Bathtubs Turn Yellow
Acrylic and Fibreglass Baths: UV Degradation
The most common cause of yellowing in modern acrylic or fibreglass baths is UV exposure. Sunlight (or strong artificial light over time) breaks down the polymer compounds in the acrylic surface, causing a gradual colour shift from white toward yellow or cream. This is a material change rather than a surface deposit β which is why scrubbing harder doesn't help.
UV yellowing is most common in:
- Bathrooms with skylights or large north-facing windows
- Older baths (the UV stabilisers in acrylic degrade over time)
- Baths that have lost their original surface finish through abrasive cleaning
Hard Water Staining and Mineral Deposits
Adelaide's hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on bath surfaces. Over time, these accumulate as a chalky, yellowed or orange-tinged film β particularly around the waterline and at the tap end where water flows.
This is a surface deposit rather than material degradation β which means it can be removed with the right treatment.
Soap Scum and Product Residue
The combination of body oils, soap, shampoo and conditioner that washes down the bath every day leaves a cumulative film. Fresh soap scum is white; aged soap scum, combined with body oil and the minerals in hard water, turns yellowish.
Iron Staining (Orange/Brown Tinge)
If the yellowing has an orange or rust-brown tinge, it's likely iron staining β from iron in the water supply depositing on the surface. Adelaide's water can carry trace iron in some supply areas.
Identifying What You're Dealing With
Run your finger across the discoloured area:
Rough, powdery or slightly grainy texture: Mineral deposits or soap scum. Surface treatment will work.
Smooth, uniform colour change that doesn't have any texture: UV degradation of the acrylic. This is a material change β harder to address.
Orange or rust-coloured patches: Iron staining. Requires acid treatment (oxalic acid).
Staining concentrated at the waterline and drain area: Product residue and mineral accumulation. Responds well to cleaning.
Treatment Methods
Method 1: Baking Soda and White Vinegar Paste (Mild Discolouration, Soap Scum)
Safe for acrylic, fibreglass and enamel. The combination of mild abrasive (baking soda) and acid (vinegar) addresses soap scum and light mineral staining.
- Make a paste of baking soda with enough white vinegar to form a thick consistency.
- Apply to the yellowed areas with a cloth or non-scratch sponge.
- Leave for 15β20 minutes.
- Scrub gently with the sponge β circular motions on flat areas, back-and-forth on textured areas.
- Rinse thoroughly.
This works well for light yellowing from product and mineral accumulation. It won't address UV degradation.
Method 2: Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment (Yellowing from Product Buildup)
Hydrogen peroxide (3%, available from pharmacies) is a gentle oxidising bleach that addresses organic yellowing β from body oils, product residue, and some forms of staining.
- Pour or spray 3% hydrogen peroxide onto the yellowed surface.
- Leave for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Wipe with a damp cloth.
- Rinse.
- Repeat if needed β multiple treatments produce cumulative improvement.
For significant yellowing: soak paper towels in hydrogen peroxide, lay them across the yellowed surface, cover with plastic wrap to prevent drying, and leave for 2β4 hours. This extended contact time produces better results than a quick application.
Safe on: Acrylic, fibreglass, enamel. Won't damage the surface.
Method 3: Commercial Bath and Tile Restorer (Moderate to Heavy Yellowing)
Products specifically designed for restoring discoloured baths contain a combination of mild bleaching agents and surface-active compounds that address both staining and light mineral accumulation.
Products available in Australia: White King Bathroom Stain Remover, Shower Power Bath and Tile Cleaner, or dedicated bath restorer products from cleaning supply stores.
Follow product instructions. Most require application to a dry surface, dwell time of 5β15 minutes, and rinsing.
Method 4: Car Headlight Polishing Compound (UV Yellowing on Acrylic)
This is the method that surprises most people β and it works. Car headlight restoration compounds (Turtle Wax Headlight Lens Restorer, Meguiar's PlastX, or similar) are specifically designed to restore UV-yellowed clear plastic β which is chemically very similar to the acrylic used in bathtubs.
- Clean the bath thoroughly first with a standard bathroom cleaner.
- Apply a small amount of headlight restorer compound to a microfibre cloth.
- Polish the yellowed area in circular motions with moderate pressure.
- The compound is a very fine abrasive that removes the degraded UV-damaged surface layer, revealing the less-degraded material beneath.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
- Apply a UV protectant (Meguiar's PlastX includes one; alternatively a dedicated plastic UV protectant) to slow re-yellowing.
This method produces genuinely impressive results on UV-yellowed acrylic baths. The limitation: it removes material. Each polishing session removes a thin layer of acrylic. A bath that has been heavily UV-degraded over many years has thinner material to polish back to, and repeated polishing will eventually reach the limit of viable restoration.
Method 5: Oxalic Acid (Iron/Rust Staining)
For orange or rust-coloured staining from iron deposits:
Bar Keeper's Friend (contains oxalic acid) applied as a paste to the stained area, left for 5β10 minutes, then scrubbed gently with a non-scratch sponge. Rinse thoroughly.
For significant iron staining, a dedicated rust stain remover for bathrooms is more concentrated. Apply per product instructions.
What NOT to Use on Acrylic or Fibreglass Baths
Abrasive scouring pads (green Scotch-Brite, steel wool): Permanently scratch the acrylic surface. Scratches create microscopic grooves that trap dirt and staining and make future cleaning harder. Never use on acrylic.
Acetone or nail polish remover: Dissolves acrylic. Causes permanent damage.
Undiluted bleach (applied directly and left): Short-term use of diluted bleach is generally tolerated by acrylic, but leaving concentrated bleach on an acrylic surface causes yellowing and surface breakdown β ironically, making the yellowing problem worse.
Abrasive cleaning powders without checking compatibility: Some scouring powders are too abrasive for acrylic. Baking soda is fine. Ajax powder, Bon Ami β these are borderline and best avoided on acrylic.
Enamel Baths: Different Approach
Older homes often have cast iron baths with enamel coating. Enamel is harder than acrylic but can chip. The yellowing mechanisms and treatments are similar, but:
- Enamel tolerates slightly more aggressive treatment than acrylic
- A chipped enamel bath can be re-enamelled by a professional β a cost-effective restoration for a quality cast iron bath
- Abrasive cleaners should still be avoided on enamel to prevent surface scratching
After Restoration: Protecting the Surface
Once the bath is restored to an acceptable colour:
Apply a bath wax or polish: Products like Rejuvenate Tub and Tile Restorer or a dedicated acrylic bath wax applied quarterly create a hydrophobic layer that repels soap scum and mineral deposits, making them much easier to clean.
Rinse after each use: A quick rinse of the bath after every use removes body oils and product residue before they accumulate.
Dry the bath: Leaving the bath dry between uses significantly slows mineral deposit accumulation in Adelaide's hard water environment.
Address ventilation: If UV exposure is the cause, evaluate whether window tinting, a blind, or different bathroom lighting can reduce the UV load on the bath surface.
