Concrete and Paving Cleaning Adelaide: Stains, Oil and Moss Removal
Oil, rust, moss, tyre marks β concrete and paving take a beating. Here's the right approach for each stain type, so you're not wasting time with products that don't work.
Driveways, paths and paved outdoor areas are among the most heavily used surfaces on any property β and the ones that accumulate the most varied and stubborn staining. Oil from cars. Rust from garden furniture and downpipe brackets. Moss and algae from shaded winter conditions. Tyre marks. Bird droppings. Leaf tannin staining.
Each of these stain types has a specific chemistry and requires a specific approach. The wrong product on the wrong stain wastes time and often makes the stain worse. This guide covers each stain category with the method that actually works.
General Maintenance Cleaning vs Stain Treatment
Before the specific stains, a note on the distinction:
General maintenance cleaning of concrete and paving (removing accumulated grime, dust, general soiling): professional pressure washing in Adelaide with or without a pre-treatment of degreaser. This is the periodic clean you do to maintain the overall appearance.
Stain treatment is targeted work on specific deposits that don't respond to general cleaning pressure washing.
Most concrete and paving cleaning starts with a general pressure wash, which reveals the specific stains beneath the surface grime. Those stains then get targeted treatment.
Oil and Grease Stains
Oil stains from parked cars, lawn equipment, and machinery are among the most common and most stubborn staining problems on driveways and garage floors.
Fresh Oil Spills
Time matters enormously with oil stains. A fresh spill can be significantly reduced or eliminated if treated immediately.

Absorb first: Pour cat litter, sawdust, baking soda, or a commercial oil absorbent generously over the spill. These materials absorb the oil from the surface before it penetrates deep into the concrete pores. Leave for 30β60 minutes.

Sweep up: Collect and dispose of the absorbent material in the bin.

Degrease: Apply concentrated dish soap or a commercial degreaser directly to the remaining stain. Add a small amount of water and scrub with a stiff brush. The degreaser emulsifies the oil and allows it to be rinsed away.

Rinse: Flush thoroughly with water, then pressure wash.
For fresh spills treated promptly, this method often leaves no visible staining.
Old, Set Oil Stains
Oil that has been in concrete for weeks, months or years has penetrated into the concrete pore structure and cannot be fully removed from the surface. The most effective approach:
Commercial concrete degreaser with extended dwell time:
- Apply a commercial degreaser (Selleys Cement Clean, Krud Kutter Concrete Cleaner, or similar) to the dry stain.
- Work it into the stain with a stiff brush.
- Leave for 30β60 minutes (longer for deeper stains).
- Scrub vigorously.
- Pressure wash. Repeat if needed.
Poultice method for very old, deep stains: Mix a dry absorbent material (baking soda, talcum powder, or commercial poultice material) with a degreaser solvent (acetone or commercial degreaser) to form a thick paste. Apply to the stain, cover with plastic wrap, and leave for 24β48 hours. The solvent draws the oil up out of the concrete and the dry material absorbs it. Remove, scrub and rinse.
Realistic expectation: Very old, deep oil stains may not fully remove. They typically reduce significantly with treatment, and the remaining ghost of the stain may be all that's achievable without full concrete resurfacing.
Moss and Algae
Moss and algae growth on shaded concrete and pavers is a winter staple in Adelaide. South and east-facing areas that retain moisture are most affected.
Why Moss and Algae Grow
Moss and algae need: moisture, organic matter (dust, leaf debris), low sunlight, and a surface to grow on. Concrete and pavers provide all of these in the right conditions.
Removal Method

Kill before cleaning: Apply a diluted bleach solution (1:5 with water) or a commercial moss and algae killer (Wet & Forget, Spray & Leave) to the growth. Leave for 20β30 minutes. The chemical kills the growth, making it much easier to remove β live moss and algae smear; dead growth rinses away.

Pressure wash: After the dwell time, pressure wash the surface. The dead moss and algae lift away with the water. For lichen (more firmly attached than moss), a stiff brush and scrubbing before pressure washing improves results.

Post-treatment prevention: Once the surface is clean and dry, apply a residual algaecide (Wet & Forget is widely used and lasts 12+ months). This significantly slows re-growth, particularly in persistently shaded areas.
Plant protection: Bleach-based treatments damage surrounding plants. Wet the garden beds adjacent to the work area before treatment, cover sensitive plants, and rinse plant surfaces after cleaning is complete.
Rust Stains
Rust stains on concrete come from: metal garden furniture legs, metal downpipes and brackets, steel reinforcing that has oxidised and bleeds through the concrete surface, or tools and metal objects left on the surface.
Rust stains are orange-brown and concentrated around the metal source.
Removal Method
Oxalic acid: The most effective DIY treatment for rust on concrete. Bar Keeper's Friend (contains oxalic acid) or a dedicated rust stain remover for concrete.
- Wet the stained area.
- Apply the product to the stain.
- Leave for 5β15 minutes.
- Scrub with a stiff brush.
- Rinse thoroughly.
For very heavy staining, a more concentrated oxalic acid solution (available from cleaning supply stores) is more effective.
Caution: Oxalic acid can etch coloured or polished concrete. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
Addressing the source: Rust stains from furniture legs don't respond to permanent treatment because the source continues to produce rust. Place rubber or plastic feet under metal furniture legs to break the metal-to-concrete contact.
Tyre Marks
Tyre rubber deposits on driveways and parking areas appear as dark, waxy streaks or circles from turning vehicles.
Removal Method
Tyre marks are rubber and oil-based β they require a solvent or aggressive degreaser.
- Apply a tyre mark remover or a strong alkaline degreaser (TSP β trisodium phosphate β solution is effective).
- Leave for 5 minutes.
- Scrub with a stiff brush.
- Pressure wash.
For fresh tyre marks, general degreaser works well. For old, set marks, TSP solution or an aggressive commercial cleaner is needed.
Bird Droppings and Tannin Staining
Bird Droppings
Bird droppings are acidic and etch concrete and stone if left long-term. Fresh droppings rinse away with water. Old droppings that have dried and hardened: soak with water until softened, then scrub and rinse. For staining left behind: a diluted bleach solution or hydrogen peroxide applied to the stain, left briefly, then rinsed.
Leaf Tannin Staining
Dark brown staining from leaves left on concrete or pavers (tannins leach from decomposing leaves). Most common under trees in autumn.
A bleach solution applied to the stain, left for 15β20 minutes, then pressure washed removes most tannin staining. For stubborn staining, an oxalic acid solution is effective.
Prevention: Remove leaf debris promptly rather than allowing it to decompose in contact with paving.
Efflorescence (White Chalky Deposits)
White, powdery or crystalline deposits on concrete or pavers are efflorescence β mineral salts leaching through the concrete with moisture movement.
Removal
Diluted white vinegar or citric acid solution applied to the deposits, left for 15β20 minutes, scrubbed and rinsed. The acid dissolves the calcium carbonate deposits. For heavier efflorescence, a diluted hydrochloric acid solution (muriatic acid β use carefully with full PPE and ventilation) is more effective.
Important: Acid should not be used on coloured concrete, exposed aggregate, or natural stone. Test in an inconspicuous area.
Addressing recurrence: Efflorescence indicates moisture movement through the concrete β from the soil beneath, from a water source, or from inadequate drainage. Repeated efflorescence that keeps returning needs a drainage or waterproofing solution, not repeated acid treatment.
Sealing After Cleaning
Clean concrete and paving is the right time to apply a sealer. A quality penetrating concrete sealer:
- Reduces porosity (making future stains easier to clean)
- Reduces moisture penetration (reducing efflorescence and moss growth)
- Extends the interval between cleaning sessions
Available at hardware stores in water-based and solvent-based formulations. Apply to completely dry concrete with a roller or brush according to product instructions. Reapply every 3β5 years.
