How to Deal With Dust in Adelaide (It's a Specific Problem Here)
Adelaide's dust is a genuine challenge β dry climate, summer northerlies, and fine red clay that gets everywhere. Here's why it's worse here than in most cities and what actually works to manage it.
If you've lived in Adelaide for any length of time, you know the dust experience. You clean the house thoroughly on Saturday. By Monday, there's already a visible film on the TV unit. After a summer northerly, every horizontal surface in the house has a reddish-brown coating of fine clay dust. You dust the skirting boards and they need doing again within a week.
This isn't a cleaning frequency problem or a technique problem. It's a climate and geography problem β and Adelaide's specific combination of factors makes dust management more challenging here than in most Australian cities.
Understanding why helps you address it more effectively.
Why Adelaide Dust Is Worse Than Most Places
Dry Climate
Dust is a problem in dry climates because moisture is what keeps dust particles on the ground. In humid environments, dust particles absorb atmospheric moisture and become heavier, settling and clumping rather than staying airborne. In dry conditions, dust stays fine and light β capable of travelling long distances, staying airborne longer, and penetrating more easily through gaps in building fabric.
Adelaide's Mediterranean climate β dry summers with low humidity β is near-ideal for dust generation and transport. The national average relative humidity in Adelaide in January is around 35β40%, compared to 70%+ in Brisbane or Sydney.
Summer Northerlies and Dust Storms
Adelaide's summer northerly winds blow across the arid interior of South Australia and bring fine clay dust from the outback. The particle size of this dust is particularly fine β measured in microns β which means it penetrates through window seals, door gaps, and even microscopic openings in the building envelope.
After a strong northerly or dust storm, the dust penetration into homes is striking. Even in homes with doors and windows firmly closed, a visible layer of reddish-brown dust settles on every horizontal surface β including inside wardrobes and cupboards.
Dry Soil and Garden Conditions
Adelaide's summer gardens and parks have dry, bare soil in many areas. Foot traffic and wind mobilise this material into fine airborne particles that enter homes through normal ventilation. Areas adjacent to parks, sports grounds, or construction sites are particularly affected.
Suburban Leaf Litter and Pollen
Adelaide's autumn produces significant leaf fall. Dry leaves break down into fine particles that become part of the dust load. Spring and early summer bring pollen from the extensive tree cover in Adelaide's suburban gardens β particularly significant in the eastern suburbs and Hills areas.
What Adelaide Dust Is Made Of
Understanding the composition informs the cleaning approach.
Adelaide household dust contains:

The fine clay component is what distinguishes Adelaide dust from the domestic dust of more humid cities. It's finer, more penetrating, and settles on a wider range of surfaces.
The Cleaning Approach That Actually Works
1. Damp Wipe, Don't Dry Dust
Dry dusting with a cloth or feather duster moves fine particles from the surface into the air, where they recirculate and settle again elsewhere β often on the same surfaces. You're redistributing, not removing.
Damp microfibre cloths capture fine dust particles through electrostatic attraction and the mechanical trapping of microfibre. The particles are removed from the surface, not put back into the air.
For all hard surfaces β skirting boards, shelves, windowsills, TV units, blinds β damp microfibre wiping is significantly more effective than dry dusting for Adelaide's fine clay dust.
2. HEPA Vacuuming
Standard vacuums without HEPA filtration exhaust fine particles through the motor. In effect, they pick up visible debris but return the fine dust fraction to the air. In Adelaide's fine-dust environment, this is particularly counterproductive.
A vacuum with a sealed HEPA filter captures particles down to 0.3 microns β effectively capturing the fine clay particles that standard vacuums return to the air.
For carpeted homes in Adelaide, HEPA vacuuming makes a measurable difference to both surface cleanliness and air quality.
3. Increase Cleaning Frequency During Dust Season
Adelaide's dust season (OctoberβMarch, peaking during summer northerlies) requires higher cleaning frequency than the cooler months. A fortnightly dust schedule that works in winter may need to become weekly during summer, with additional spot cleaning after major dust events.
This is simply the reality of Adelaide's climate. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
4. Immediate Response to Dust Storm Events
After a significant dust event β a visible haze or reddish-brown coating on outdoor surfaces β the interior of the home needs attention within 24β48 hours. The fine clay dust that penetrated during the event will continue to settle from the air for days if not addressed.
Post-dust-event clean:
- HEPA vacuum all carpeted surfaces
- Damp wipe all horizontal hard surfaces
- Mop hard floors
- Change or clean air conditioning filters (they capture significant dust load during events)
- Check and clean window sills and tracks β these accumulate heavy deposits during dust events
5. Address Entry Points
Dust enters through:
- Gaps around doors and windows
- Ventilation openings
- Shoes and clothing
- Open windows
Practical interventions:
- Door seals and weather stripping: check and replace gaps around external doors. This has a meaningful impact on dust penetration during dust events.
- Door mats: exterior and interior door mats at all entry points trap soil from shoes before it reaches carpet and hard floors. Use door mats that are effective at particle capture β rubber or bristle mats, not smooth vinyl.
- Shoes off at the door: removes one of the primary soil and dust vectors before it reaches the interior.
6. Air Conditioning Filters
Air conditioning is near-universal in Adelaide homes given the summer heat. The AC return air filter captures household dust. A clogged filter recirculates dust through the system rather than capturing it β and reduces cooling efficiency.
Check and clean filters monthly during summer. This is one of the most impactful single changes for reducing airborne dust levels in the home.
Upgrade the filter: Standard AC filters (fibreglass or basic polyester) capture larger particles. Higher-rated filters (HEPA or MERV-13 rating) capture finer particles including the clay-size particles common in Adelaide dust. Check your AC unit's specifications for compatible filter ratings before upgrading.
7. Blinds and Curtains
Horizontal venetian blind slats are among the worst dust collectors in an Adelaide home β they provide maximum horizontal surface area in the direct path of airflow from windows. After Bushfire Smoke Events
Bushfire smoke events β increasingly frequent in South Australia β bring a different type of particle: combustion particles that are oily and sticky rather than dry and floaty. These particles coat surfaces and require degreasing action as well as dust removal.
After a smoke event: ventilate when outdoor air quality improves, damp wipe all surfaces with a mild cleaning solution (not just water), change air conditioning filters, and launder any soft furnishings or clothing that was left in smoke-affected air.
