The Most Germ-Infested Spots in Your Home (Ranked by a Cleaner)
It's not the toilet seat you need to worry about. Research consistently shows the most bacteria-laden surfaces in a home are in the kitchen, not the bathroom. Here's the real list.
The toilet seat has a reputation as the dirtiest thing in the home. Research consistently shows this reputation is wrong. The toilet seat is cleaned frequently, exposed to light and air, and people make deliberate hygiene choices around it. The surfaces that carry the highest bacterial loads in most homes are in places people interact with constantly without thinking about hygiene at all.
Here's what the research actually shows, ranked by typical bacterial load.
1. Kitchen Sponge and Dish Cloth
The kitchen sponge is almost certainly the most contaminated object in most Australian homes.
A 2017 study published in Scientific Reports (Cardinale et al.) found bacterial densities of up to 54 billion cells per cubic centimetre in used kitchen sponges β higher than in most of the other surfaces tested in the home. The organisms found included Moraxella osloensis (which causes the "wet dog" smell from damp clothes), members of the Pseudomonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae families, with some samples containing E. coli and related organisms.
Why so contaminated: the kitchen sponge is warm, wet, and receives organic matter (food residue) constantly β ideal bacterial growth conditions. It then deposits this bacterial load on every surface it touches during cleaning.
What to do: Replace kitchen sponges every 2β4 weeks. Between replacements, microwave the sponge damp for 60 seconds (reduces bacterial load significantly) or run through the dishwasher on the hottest setting. Consider switching to a brush (which dries faster between uses) for dish washing, and using disposable cloths or frequently laundered microfibre for surface wiping.
2. Kitchen Sink and Drain
The kitchen sink typically contains more bacteria than the toilet bowl. This surprises most people β but consider what goes into the kitchen sink: raw meat juices, food scraps, dish water that's contacted every type of organic material in the kitchen.
NSF International's 2011 study of household bacteria hotspots found that the kitchen sink had higher bacterial counts (including coliform bacteria) than the toilet seat in most of the homes tested. The drain and the drain stopper are particularly heavily contaminated.
What to do: Sanitise the kitchen sink and surrounding area after contact with raw meat or poultry (a step covered in our raw chicken guide). Clean the sink with a disinfectant cleaner weekly. Clear drain debris regularly.
3. Kitchen Counter, Especially Near the Sink
Counter space near the sink receives contaminated water splash, residue from raw food preparation, and contact from hands that have touched raw ingredients. It's cleaned frequently but rarely disinfected β cleaned with the same sponge that's spreading bacteria across every surface it touches.
What to do: Use a specific disinfecting spray on kitchen counters after any raw food preparation and as part of the daily kitchen clean-down, separate from the general wiping cloth.
4. Mobile Phone
Studies consistently find hundreds to thousands of different bacterial species on mobile phone screens β including pathogens. Phones are touched hundreds of times per day with hands that have touched many other surfaces, and then held against the face. They're rarely cleaned. They go into bathrooms.
A 2019 study at the University of Surrey found mobile phones carry 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.
What to do: Wipe phones with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (Apple specifically endorses this for iPhones) at least weekly. Don't take phones into the bathroom.
5. Keyboard and Mouse
As covered in our home office cleaning guide, keyboards have been found to carry bacteria counts significantly higher than toilet surfaces in multiple studies. The warm, crumb-filled, skin-contact environment between and under the keys is ideal for bacterial accumulation.
What to do: Clean keyboard and mouse with isopropyl alcohol wipes weekly.
6. Remote Controls
Remote controls are touched by every member of the household throughout the day, rarely cleaned, and often shared while people are sick. Their textured surfaces and button gaps trap organic matter.
What to do: Wipe with an isopropyl alcohol wipe or a disinfectant wipe at least weekly. During illness periods, increase to daily.
7. Door Handles and Light Switches
Every person who passes through the home touches these surfaces. They receive hand contact constantly and are cleaned infrequently in most households. During illness periods particularly, they become efficient transmission points.
What to do: Include door handles and light switches in the weekly disinfection routine. During illness in the household, disinfect daily.
8. Toothbrush Holder
The container that holds toothbrushes is one of the most contaminated surfaces in the bathroom. It receives the drips from rinsed toothbrushes (which contain mouth bacteria and food particles), sits in the moist bathroom environment, and is almost never cleaned.
NSF's household bacteria study found toothbrush holders to be among the top 5 germiest surfaces in homes studied.
What to do: Wash the toothbrush holder weekly in hot soapy water, or run through the dishwasher if the material allows.
9. Coffee Maker and Water Reservoir
The water reservoir of pod or filter coffee machines is moist, warm and organic-containing β prime biofilm conditions. NSF International has found significant yeast and mould presence in coffee machine reservoirs, with many also containing coliform bacteria.
What to do: Run a cleaning cycle with vinegar monthly, as covered in our dishwasher and appliance cleaning guides. Run plain water cycles after to remove vinegar before use. Rinse removable water reservoirs weekly.
10. Reusable Shopping Bags
Reusable shopping bags that carry raw meat and produce and are then stored damp in a car boot or cupboard without washing develop significant bacterial contamination over time.
A 2011 University of Arizona study found coliform bacteria in 51% of reusable bags tested, and E. coli in 8%.
What to do: Machine wash reusable bags regularly, particularly bags used for raw meat or produce. Use dedicated bags for different product types (one for meat, one for produce) if possible.
Where the Toilet Seat Actually Ranks
To address the obvious question: the toilet seat is typically among the cleaner surfaces in a well-maintained bathroom. It's regularly cleaned and disinfected, it dries between uses (bacteria don't thrive on dry surfaces), and people are hygiene-conscious around it.
Compared to the kitchen sponge, kitchen sink, mobile phone or keyboard β the toilet seat is significantly less contaminated in most homes. Its reputation is based on perception rather than microbiology.
