How to Prevent Mould in Your Adelaide Home During Winter
Adelaide's mild but wet winters create near-ideal mould conditions across the home β not just the bathroom. Here's how to stay ahead of it through the season.
Adelaide's winter is comparatively mild by Australian standards β no snow, rarely freezing β but it brings the combination of conditions that mould thrives on: sustained higher humidity from regular rainfall, cooler temperatures that mean less natural ventilation (windows closed for warmth), and homes sealed up for heating efficiency that simultaneously trap moisture indoors.
While bathrooms are the most commonly discussed mould location, winter mould risk in Adelaide homes extends well beyond bathrooms β into wardrobes, behind furniture against external walls, in window frames, and in poorly ventilated bedrooms. This guide covers a whole-home approach to winter mould prevention.
Understanding the Winter Mould Conditions
Mould requires moisture, a food source (organic material β dust, fabric, timber, even some paint types), and a temperature range that's actually quite broad (most household mould species are comfortable across typical indoor winter temperatures). The factor that changes most significantly in winter is moisture β both from increased outdoor humidity and rainfall, and from indoor sources that become more concentrated when ventilation decreases.
Indoor moisture sources that increase in winter:
- Cooking (steam from boiling, simmering β used more for winter meals)
- Showering and bathing (often longer, hotter showers in winter)
- Clothes drying indoors (a significant and often underestimated moisture source when outdoor drying is less practical)
- Breathing and general occupancy (a household of four people can release several litres of moisture into the air daily simply through breathing and normal activity)
- Heating appliances (some unflued gas heaters release significant moisture as a combustion byproduct)
Reduced ventilation in winter:
- Windows closed for warmth and to reduce heating costs
- Doors kept shut to retain heat in specific rooms
- Less natural airflow throughout the home generally
The combination β more moisture generated, less moisture removed β is the core winter mould equation.
Room-by-Room Winter Mould Prevention

The key winter-specific point: exhaust fan use becomes even more critical in winter, as the temptation to open a window after a shower (the alternative ventilation method) is much lower when it's cold outside. Running the exhaust fan for a full 20β30 minutes after every shower β longer than might feel necessary β compensates for the reduced natural ventilation winter brings.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms are a commonly overlooked mould risk area in winter, particularly:
Wardrobes against external walls: A wardrobe built against an external wall, particularly a south-facing or less sun-exposed wall, can develop condensation on the internal wall surface behind clothing, leading to mould on stored clothing and the wardrobe interior itself. This is a common and often surprising discovery for many Adelaide homeowners each winter.
Prevention: Leave a small gap between stored items and the external wall where possible. Consider a moisture absorber (DampRid or similar silica-based products) inside enclosed wardrobes during winter months. Periodically open wardrobe doors to allow air circulation, even briefly.
Under beds: Particularly beds without adequate airflow underneath (solid bases, or beds with significant storage underneath that restricts airflow), condensation can develop on the floor beneath, especially over a concrete slab floor in direct contact with the cooler ground temperature.
Prevention: Where practical, avoid storing items in sealed containers directly on the floor under the bed against external walls; allow some airflow space.
Bedroom ventilation generally: Opening bedroom windows for even 15β20 minutes daily, even on cold winter days, exchanges the moisture-laden indoor air for drier outdoor air (counter-intuitively, outdoor air β even when it feels damp from rain β is often drier in absolute humidity terms than indoor air saturated with overnight breathing and any heating-related moisture).
Living Areas
Behind furniture against external walls: Sofas, bookshelves and other furniture placed flush against an external wall can restrict airflow and create localised condensation risk, similar to the wardrobe issue. Where practical, leaving a small gap (even 5β10cm) between large furniture and external walls allows some air circulation.
Drying clothes indoors: This is one of the most significant indoor moisture sources in Adelaide winter homes, given that outdoor line drying is often impractical during the wetter months. If indoor drying is necessary:
- Use a well-ventilated room with the door open and, if possible, a window cracked or an exhaust fan running
- Avoid drying clothes in bedrooms, particularly small or poorly ventilated ones
- A dehumidifier running in the room where clothes are drying significantly reduces the moisture load released into the broader home
- Where budget allows, a clothes dryer (vented to outside, not unvented) removes this moisture source from the indoor air entirely
Kitchen
Cooking ventilation: Running the rangehood during and after cooking (covered in our cooking smells guide) is as relevant for moisture management in winter as it is for odour control β boiling and steaming release significant water vapour that needs somewhere to go.
Drying dishes: Allowing dishes to air dry in a dish rack (rather than towel drying and putting away immediately) releases moisture into the kitchen air over an extended period β if mould is a particular concern in your kitchen, towel drying and prompt put-away reduces this contribution.
Whole-Home Strategies
Heating and Humidity Balance
Heating a home raises the air temperature but doesn't reduce its moisture content β in fact, warm air can hold more moisture than cold air, which means a heated, sealed-up home can actually develop higher relative humidity issues at certain wall and window surfaces (where the temperature differential between the warm room air and the cooler external-wall-adjacent surface causes condensation) than an equivalent unheated space.
This is a genuinely counter-intuitive point: simply heating a home doesn't solve moisture issues and can, in specific circumstances, contribute to them at cold-surface condensation points. Ventilation remains necessary alongside heating, not replaced by it.
Dehumidifiers
For Adelaide homes with persistent winter humidity issues β particularly older homes with less effective insulation, or homes in naturally damper locations (low-lying areas, near watercourses) β a portable dehumidifier can make a measurable difference. Running in problem rooms (commonly bathrooms after use, or bedrooms with wardrobe condensation issues) for a few hours daily during the wettest months addresses the moisture load directly.
Checking Subfloor Ventilation (Older Homes)
Many older Adelaide homes have a raised timber subfloor with under-house ventilation via vents in the base of external walls. If these vents have become blocked (by garden growth, stored items, or renovation work that inadvertently covered them), subfloor moisture can increase significantly during winter, which can contribute to mould-promoting conditions in the floors above. A check (and clearing if needed) of subfloor vents is a worthwhile winter preparation task, ideally done before the wet season in autumn.
Roof and Wall Cavity Ventilation
For homes with known ventilation issues in roof cavities, ensuring roof vents (whirlybirds, eave vents, or other passive ventilation) are clear and functional supports moisture management in the broader building envelope, reducing condensation risk that can manifest as ceiling staining or, in more significant cases, structural timber issues over time.
Early Detection: What to Watch For
Catching the early signs of developing mould conditions before visible mould establishes allows for prevention rather than remediation:

- Condensation regularly visible on windows in the morning β a sign of high indoor humidity relative to the glass temperature
- Any slight discolouration developing on walls, particularly in corners or behind furniture
- Clothing or fabric items that feel slightly damp or smell musty when retrieved from storage
Addressing any of these signs promptly β increasing ventilation, checking the specific area, applying preventive treatment if needed β is significantly less work than addressing established mould later in the season.
