How to Remove Limescale From Taps, Sinks and Basins
Adelaide has some of the hardest water in Australia. Limescale on taps, around sink bases and on basin surfaces is near-universal. Here's the method that actually removes it β and keeps it away longer.
Adelaide's water is hard. This is a simple fact of the city's water supply β predominantly sourced from the Murray River and local reservoirs, it contains elevated levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium compared to most other Australian capital cities. When this water evaporates off surfaces β as it constantly does in bathrooms and kitchens β it deposits those minerals as calcium carbonate: limescale.
The result is visible in almost every Adelaide home that doesn't actively manage it: a white or grey chalky crust around the base of taps, at the waterline of sinks, around the edges of basins, and anywhere else water regularly contacts a surface and then dries.
Limescale isn't just cosmetic. Heavy buildup on tap mechanisms and aerators restricts water flow. Inside dishwashers and washing machines, it coats heating elements and reduces efficiency. On shower screens, it creates the cloudy frosted appearance that normal cleaning doesn't touch.
The good news: limescale responds well to the right treatment. The challenge is that most everyday cleaning products aren't formulated to address it.
The Chemistry: Why Acid Works and Water Doesn't
Limescale is calcium carbonate (CaCOβ) β an alkaline mineral compound. Water doesn't dissolve it, which is why wiping with a damp cloth has no effect. Alkaline cleaners (most bathroom sprays, dish soap) also don't dissolve it β like doesn't react with like.
Acid, however, reacts with calcium carbonate and dissolves it into soluble calcium salts that rinse away. This is the principle behind every effective limescale remover: vinegar (acetic acid), citric acid, and commercial descalers (often containing sulphamic acid or phosphoric acid) all work by the same mechanism.
The strength of the acid and the contact time determine how much limescale is removed. Light buildup dissolves quickly with mild acid. Years of accumulated scale requires stronger acid, longer contact time, or mechanical assistance (gentle scrubbing to remove the softened mineral layer).
Light Limescale: White Vinegar Method
For regular maintenance and light buildup β the chalky ring that appears after a few weeks without treatment:
What you need: White vinegar (5% acetic acid), a cloth, and optionally an old toothbrush.
On taps:
- Soak a cloth or paper towel in undiluted white vinegar.
- Wrap it around the affected tap, particularly the base where the tap meets the basin.
- Leave for 30β60 minutes. For light buildup, this is sufficient.
- Remove the cloth and wipe away the loosened scale. It should come away easily.
- Use a toothbrush to get into the joints and crevices around the tap fitting.
- Rinse thoroughly and polish with a dry cloth.
On basin surfaces and sink:
- Pour or spray white vinegar over the affected area.
- Leave for 10β20 minutes.
- Scrub with a non-scratch pad or cloth.
- Rinse thoroughly.
On the inside of a kettle or coffee machine: Fill halfway with equal parts vinegar and water. Boil. Leave for 30 minutes. Empty, rinse twice, and boil with plain water before use.
Moderate to Heavy Buildup: Citric Acid Method
Citric acid is stronger than acetic acid (vinegar) for mineral removal and is widely available as a powder from supermarkets and health food stores. It's the active ingredient in most commercial dishwasher cleaner and descaler tablets.
Mixing: Dissolve 2β3 tablespoons of citric acid powder in 250ml of warm water. For heavy buildup, use 4β5 tablespoons.
Method:
- Apply the citric acid solution to the limescale using a cloth or spray bottle.
- For tap bases and around fittings: soak a cloth in the solution, wrap around the fitting, and leave for 1β2 hours.
- For stubborn buildup, reapply if the first application dries before the dwell time is complete.
- Scrub with a toothbrush or non-scratch pad.
- Rinse thoroughly. Citric acid residue left on chrome or stainless steel can dull the surface if not rinsed.
Citric acid is also excellent for: Washing machine drums (run an empty hot cycle with citric acid powder in the drum), dishwasher interiors, and showerheads.
Severe or Long-Standing Buildup: Commercial Descaler
For significant accumulation that hasn't been treated in years, or for Adelaide's most mineral-heavy water scenarios, a dedicated commercial descaler is more effective than vinegar or citric acid alone.
Products available in Australia:
- CLR (Calcium Lime Rust) β widely available, effective
- Selleys Rapid Rust and Lime Remover
- White King Bathroom Stain Remover
- Bar Keeper's Friend (also contains oxalic acid, effective on mineral deposits)
- Scalex or similar descaling products from cleaning supply stores
Method: Apply according to product instructions. Most commercial descalers require a contact time of 3β10 minutes, then scrubbing and thorough rinsing. For heavy buildup on taps, soaking a cloth in the product and wrapping it around the fitting extends contact time.
Important warnings for commercial descalers:
- Check product compatibility with your surface. Strong commercial descalers can damage: natural stone (marble, granite, travertine β don't use any acid on these), gold or coloured tap fittings (acid can strip finishes), rubber seals (extended contact damages rubber).
- Rinse extremely thoroughly after use. Commercial descalers contain acids that continue to work and can damage surfaces if left.
- Use in ventilated conditions. Commercial descalers have fumes.
Surface-Specific Guidance
Chrome Taps and Fittings
Chrome tolerates vinegar and citric acid well for moderate durations (1β2 hours). For very long soaks with commercial descalers, check the product for chrome compatibility.
After descaling, polish chrome with a dry microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine.
Gold, Brushed Gold, or Coloured Tap Finishes
These decorative finishes are significantly more sensitive than chrome. Use only diluted vinegar (50:50 with water) for short contact times (15β20 minutes maximum). Avoid commercial descalers β they can strip or permanently dull coloured finishes.
Stainless Steel Sinks
Tolerates most descaling approaches. After treatment with any acid, rinse thoroughly and dry β acid residue left on stainless steel contributes to surface dulling over time.
Ceramic and Porcelain Basins
Robust and tolerates standard descaling approaches well. The area where the tap meets the basin ceramic often has the heaviest build-up β a toothbrush with concentrated citric acid or commercial descaler applied directly to this joint clears it effectively.
Natural Stone Sinks and Basins (Marble, Granite)
Do not use any acidic descaler on natural stone. Acid etches natural stone permanently, removing the polish and creating dull patches. For limescale on natural stone, use a dedicated stone-safe limescale remover (EDTA-based chelating products available from stone care suppliers) or consult a stone specialist.
Prevention: Slowing the Return of Limescale
Limescale cannot be permanently prevented in hard water areas, but its rate of accumulation can be significantly reduced:
Dry after every use: The simplest and most effective prevention. A quick wipe of taps and the basin area after use removes the water that would otherwise evaporate and deposit minerals. Takes 10 seconds.
Squeegee shower screens daily: Removing water from glass daily prevents the layering of mineral deposits that creates hard water staining.
Regular maintenance dosing: Once a month, a vinegar wipe-down of all taps and chrome fittings takes 5 minutes and prevents accumulation before it becomes stubborn.
Tap aerators: The small mesh screens at the end of taps accumulate limescale quickly. Unscrew and soak in vinegar monthly.
Water softener: A whole-house water softener (plumbed in at the mains) reduces the mineral content of the water supply. A significant upfront investment but eliminates the problem at source. Relevant for households that find limescale management particularly time-consuming.
