How to Remove Mould From Silicone Sealant Without Replacing It
Black mould in shower silicone doesn't always mean replacement. Here's how to treat surface mould effectively, and how to tell when cleaning isn't enough and the sealant genuinely needs to come out.
The black discolouration that develops in bathroom silicone sealant β along the shower base, around the bath, and at the junction between the bath/shower and the wall β is one of the most common bathroom aesthetic issues in Australian homes. It's also one where the default recommendation ("just replace the sealant") isn't always necessary, and where effective cleaning can restore the sealant's appearance at significantly lower cost and effort than removal and replacement.
Understanding when cleaning is viable versus when replacement is genuinely needed is the practical question this guide answers.
Why Silicone Sealant Goes Black
Silicone sealant in wet areas stays constantly moist, is exposed to body oils, soap residue and organic matter from showering, and has limited air circulation in the joint position it typically occupies. This combination is ideal for mould establishment.
The mould that colonises bathroom silicone is typically black or dark grey β most commonly Cladosporium and related species that specialise in bathroom conditions. It starts on the surface of the silicone and, if left untreated, progressively penetrates deeper into the silicone's porous microstructure.
Surface mould (visible as dark spots or patches, generally early-stage development): Responds well to cleaning.
Deep-penetrating mould (where the discolouration is throughout the body of the sealant, often visible as dark colouration even when you look at a cross-section, and where surface treatment doesn't change the appearance): Cannot be cleaned out β the sealant needs replacement.
This distinction determines which approach to take.
Testing Whether Cleaning Will Work
Before committing to the full cleaning process, a simple test:
Apply a small amount of bleach or mould remover to the most heavily discoloured section and leave it for 15β20 minutes. Then check:
- If the sealant is significantly lighter or the black spots have reduced: The mould is predominantly surface-level and the full cleaning treatment will produce good results.
- If the appearance doesn't change meaningfully despite adequate dwell time: The mould has penetrated through the silicone body and cleaning won't address it. Proceed to replacement.
The Cleaning Process (For Surface Mould)
Method 1: Bleach and Cotton Wool (Most Effective Contact Method)
The challenge with cleaning bathroom sealant is maintaining adequate product contact time on a vertical or angled surface β standard spray application runs off before it has adequate dwell time to work.
The cotton wool technique maintains contact without running:
- Tear off small pieces of cotton wool (or use cotton wool balls).
- Soak them thoroughly in undiluted household bleach.
- Press the bleach-soaked cotton wool directly onto the mouldy sealant β the cotton wool stays in place and maintains continuous bleach contact with the surface.
- Cover with plastic wrap to prevent the cotton wool from drying out if you're aiming for an extended dwell time.
- Leave for at least 30 minutes β 1β2 hours for more significant mould, or overnight for the best possible result.
- Remove the cotton wool, scrub the sealant with an old toothbrush and some additional bleach.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- Dry and assess β repeat if improvement is significant but not complete.
This method achieves substantially better results than spraying bleach and wiping, because the dwell time is the active period where the bleach is killing the mould and breaking down its pigmentation.
Method 2: Commercial Mould Remover Gel
Several commercial bathroom mould removers come in a gel or thick liquid formulation specifically designed to cling to surfaces rather than running off β products like HG Mould Spray, Selleys No More Mould, or similar. These work on the same bleach/oxidising chemistry but in a more convenient, stay-in-place formulation.
Apply per product instructions (typically: apply generously, leave for specified time, scrub if needed, rinse). The gel consistency means better surface contact than standard spray-and-wipe approaches.
Method 3: Toothbrush Scrubbing With Bleach Solution
For sealant that's surface-soiled rather than deeply moulded (earlier-stage development):
- Mix a solution of 1 part bleach to 5 parts water.
- Apply to the sealant with an old toothbrush.
- Scrub the sealant length, working the bristles into the surface texture of the silicone.
- Leave for 10β15 minutes.
- Scrub again, then rinse.
Less effective than the cotton wool method for significant mould, but appropriate for early-stage treatment and regular maintenance.
When Replacement Is Necessary
Despite the most thorough cleaning:
Replace the sealant if:
- The mould appearance doesn't respond to extended bleach treatment (deep-penetrating mould)
- The sealant has pulled away from the surface (gaps between the sealant and the substrate allow water ingress and create ongoing mould and structural moisture problems beyond the sealant itself)
- The sealant is cracked, brittle or peeling β degraded silicone no longer functions as a watertight seal regardless of appearance
- The sealant appears to have discoloured uniformly throughout its depth (suggesting the original sealant wasn't mould-resistant and has developed systemic contamination)
Replacing Sealant Yourself (Overview)
- Use a silicone removal tool (plastic scraper designed for this purpose, available at hardware stores for a few dollars) and/or a craft knife to cut along the edges of the old sealant and lift it out in sections.
- Remove all residue from both surfaces, including any remaining silicone film β new silicone won't adhere properly over old residue.
- Clean and dry the surfaces thoroughly.
- Apply new mould-resistant bathroom silicone (specifically formulated for wet areas β check the label specifies mould-resistant or antifungal properties, as standard clear silicone doesn't have the same resistance) using a caulking gun, smoothed with a wet finger or a caulking tool.
- Allow to cure for the time specified (typically 24β48 hours) before water contact.
Properly applied mould-resistant silicone, in a well-ventilated bathroom, can last several years before mould becomes a significant issue again.
Prevention: Slowing Mould Return
Even with effective cleaning or new sealant, bathroom conditions favour mould β so prevention is always ongoing:
Run the exhaust fan during and for 20 minutes after every shower: The single most impactful prevention step. Less moisture in the bathroom means slower mould establishment on sealant surfaces.
Squeegee the shower after each use: 20 seconds with a squeegee reduces the water sitting against the sealant by most of the session, dramatically slowing the surface conditions that support mould.
Monthly preventive spray: A light spray of diluted bleach (1:20 with water) or a commercial mould prevention spray on sealant surfaces monthly, allowed to dwell briefly then rinsed off, inhibits mould establishment between deep cleans.
Choose mould-resistant sealant at replacement: As noted above, mould-resistant formulations perform significantly better over time than standard silicone in continuously wet areas.
