Cleaning Tips
Seasonal Cleaning Guide: What to Focus on Each Quarter in Adelaide
Adelaide's seasons bring different cleaning priorities. Dust management in summer, mould prevention in winter, gutter clearing in autumn, solar panel cleaning in spring. Here's the quarter-by-quarter guide for Adelaide homes.
Adelaide's climate is distinct enough that different seasons bring genuinely different cleaning priorities. The tasks that matter most in January are not the same as the tasks that matter most in July. A cleaning schedule built around Adelaide's specific seasonal conditions — rather than a generic annual plan — is more efficient and addresses the right problems at the right time.
This is the quarter-by-quarter guide, specific to Adelaide.
Summer (December – February): Dust Management and Heat
The Seasonal Challenge
Adelaide summers are characterised by extreme heat, very low humidity, and strong northerly winds that carry fine red clay dust from the outback interior. This is the most dust-intensive period of the year. Summer is also the season of bush fire risk, which can bring smoke events with their own cleaning requirements.
Priority Tasks This Quarter
Dust management — increase frequency: Adelaide homes need more frequent dusting in summer than any other season. Where fortnightly may be adequate in winter, weekly dusting of horizontal surfaces is necessary during summer northerlies. After any significant dust event (visible haze, cars coated in dust outside), a full interior wipe-down is needed within 48 hours.
Use damp microfibre cloths throughout — dry dusting redistributes fine clay particles rather than removing them.
Air conditioning filter cleaning — monthly: The AC runs constantly in Adelaide summer, pulling massive volumes of air through the filter. A clogged filter recirculates fine dust through the home and reduces cooling efficiency. Clean or replace filters every 4 weeks during summer.
Fly screens — inspect and clean: Summer is the peak season for fly screen use. Inspect all screens for damage before summer (holes and tears that let insects in) and clean after dust events — clogged screen mesh reduces airflow significantly.
BBQ maintenance — regular after-cook cleaning: If the BBQ is in heavy summer use, clean the grate and the interior after every cook while warm. Grease buildup in summer heat is a fire risk.
Wheelie bin — weekly deodorising: Heat accelerates decomposition dramatically. Adelaide summer bins need weekly cleaning in Adelaide or at minimum baking soda treatment and thorough lid-closing habits. Maggot prevention requires specific attention — see our wheelie bin guide.
Solar panels — late summer: The end of the dust season (February) is an ideal time for solar panel cleaning in Adelaide. A full summer of dust accumulation reduces panel output significantly.
Windows — keep closed, check seals: Counter-intuitively, summer is the season to keep windows closed (for air conditioning efficiency and dust exclusion). Check window seals and weather stripping — gaps that let cool air out are the same gaps that let dust in.
Autumn (March – May): Gutters, Pre-Winter Prep and Leaf Management
The Seasonal Challenge
Autumn in Adelaide brings leaf fall from deciduous street trees (liquid ambers, plane trees, ornamental pears), cooling temperatures, and the approach of the May–June winter rainfall. This is the critical maintenance window between summer and winter.
Priority Tasks This Quarter
Gutter cleaning — the most critical autumn task: Adelaide's autumn leaf fall fills gutters before the winter rains arrive. Blocked gutters cause water overflow onto eaves, walls and foundations during winter downpours. The April–May window is the essential maintenance period for gutter clearing. See our gutter cleaning guide.
Outdoor furniture — end of season clean and storage: Clean outdoor furniture as the outdoor entertaining season winds down. Cushions should be washed and stored dry. Metal furniture should be checked for rust and treated.
Pool area — post-summer clean: The pool area gets intensive use through summer and is ready for a thorough clean in autumn. Algae treatment on pavers, furniture clean-up, and pool chemistry balance for the reduced-use period.
Roof check: Before winter rains, visually check the roof from the ground (or via a professional inspection) for: cracked, lifted or missing tiles; deteriorated ridge capping; rust spots on corrugated iron. Address any issues before winter rainfall finds them.
Chimney or gas heater — service: If you have a wood fireplace or gas heater that hasn't been used in months, have it serviced or inspected before winter. Creosote buildup in wood fireplace flues is a fire risk.
Exhaust fans — clean all covers: Before the home is closed up for winter (less ventilation), clean all exhaust fan covers throughout the house. Bathroom fans in particular need to work properly during winter when moisture from showers can't escape through open windows.
Refrigerator condenser coils: Pull the fridge out from the wall and vacuum the condenser coils at the back (accessible from behind or from the base grille). Dusty condenser coils reduce refrigerator efficiency significantly. Autumn, when the home is being prepared for the closed-up winter period, is a logical time for this.
Winter (June – August): Mould Prevention and Indoor Air Quality
The Seasonal Challenge
Adelaide winters are mild by national standards but wet, with significant rainfall and sustained periods of overcast, cool weather. Homes are closed up with reduced ventilation. This combination — moisture and reduced airflow — creates near-ideal conditions for mould in bathrooms, laundries and poorly ventilated rooms.
Priority Tasks This Quarter
Bathroom mould prevention — proactive, not reactive: In winter, the bathroom exhaust fan is doing more work with less competing ventilation from open windows. Run it during every shower and for 20 minutes after. Inspect grout and sealant monthly for emerging mould and treat immediately — early-stage mould is dramatically easier to address than established mould. See our bathroom mould guide.
Check under sinks and around plumbing: Winter rainfall can reveal slow plumbing leaks that were invisible in summer. Check under all sinks, around toilet bases, and around shower and bath seals for any new moisture signs. Catching a slow leak early prevents mould in the wall cavity.
Wardrobes and storage — dehumidify: Closed wardrobes in winter are mould-risk zones, particularly in bedrooms that get limited sunlight. A small silica gel or moisture absorber in each wardrobe (DampRid sachets, available at supermarkets) significantly reduces humidity in enclosed storage.
Floor heating vents — clean: Floor heating vents in ducted gas heating systems accumulate dust and allergens over months of disuse. Clean vent covers before the first use of the season. For central heating systems, have the system serviced and filters replaced before heavy use begins.
Windows — condensation management: Double-glazed windows are uncommon in older Adelaide homes. Single-glazed windows develop condensation in winter, which runs down the glass and soaks into timber frames and sills. Wipe window sills regularly in winter to prevent timber rot and mould. A chamois or squeegee on interior glass in the morning after cold nights prevents moisture pooling.
Indoor plants — moderate: Plants in a closed-up winter home contribute to indoor humidity. This isn't a reason to remove plants, but a reason to be aware that heavily planted, humid rooms in winter are mould-risk environments.
Spring (September – November): Pre-Summer Prep and Deep Clean
The Seasonal Challenge
Spring in Adelaide brings warming temperatures, the opening of windows after winter, and the start of pollen season (October–December is peak grass pollen season in SA). It's the natural time for the traditional "spring clean" and for outdoor maintenance before summer heat arrives.
Priority Tasks This Quarter
Full spring deep clean: The classic spring clean — see our spring cleaning guide. With the home closed up through winter, dust, mould risk and general grime has accumulated in areas that need attention before the home opens up for summer.
Solar panels — clean before peak summer output: Clean solar panels in September or October, before the high-output summer period begins. Summer output on dirty panels costs money.
Outdoor spaces — pre-summer preparation: Pressure wash driveways, paths and patios. Clean the pool area. Set up outdoor furniture for the upcoming season. Check and clean the BBQ. Clear any winter moss or algae from paved areas (slippery when wet and a slip hazard).
Fly screen inspection — before opening windows: Before windows go open for spring, inspect all fly screens for damage. A hole in a fly screen in October is a mosquito and fly problem through November and December.
Air conditioning service: Before summer, have the ducted or split system serviced. Clean filters. This is the peak period for HVAC technicians in Adelaide — book early.
Pollen management: Adelaide's grass pollen season (October–December) is one of the most intense in Australia. See our recommendations in the allergy cleaning guide for managing pollen ingress during this period.
Rugs and carpet — professional clean before summer: Spring is the ideal time for professional carpet and rug cleaning — before summer entertaining begins, while the weather is mild enough for quick drying, and after the winter period of indoor use.
